Blackwater Valley Methodist Circuit Timeline

19th Century
Early Roots

  • c. 1830 – Methodist preaching begins in Farnham, laying the foundation for the Farnham Methodist congregation.

  • 1856 – Early Methodist mission opens in Aldershot, serving both civilian and military populations.* 1875 – Farnham Methodist congregation builds its first permanent church.

  • Late 1800s – Several Wesleyan Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels established in towns across Aldershot, Farnham, Wokingham, Bracknell, and surrounding villages.

    • Aldershot churches initially associated with the Aldershot Wesleyan Circuit and Aldershot Primitive Methodist Circuit.

    • Farnham churches were part of the Farnham & Alton Wesleyan Circuit.

20th Century
Circuit Formation and Consolidation

  • 1932 – National union of Wesleyan, Primitive, and United Methodists; local Farnham chapels consolidated under a single Methodist congregation.

  • Mid‑20th century – Methodist circuits formalised in the area:

    • Farnham & Alton Circuit serves Aldershot, Farnham, Alton, and nearby villages.

    • Bracknell & Wokingham Circuit established for churches in Bracknell, Wokingham, and surrounding villages.

    • Fleet & Frimley Circuit oversees churches in Fleet, Frimley Green, and adjacent areas.

    • Some smaller villages remained connected through satellite churches attached to these circuits.

Early 21st Century
Pre‑2012 Developments

  • 2000s – Circuits adapt to changing populations and ministry needs; outreach and collaborative ministry increase.

  • 2012 – Major restructuring of local Methodist circuits:

    • Aldershot-area churches join with the Farnham & Alton Circuit to form the Hampshire‑Surrey Border Circuit (Hants‑Surrey Border Circuit).

    • Berkshire Surrey Borders Circuit continues to serve churches across Bracknell Forest and Wokingham Borough.

    • This structure strengthens shared ministry, pastoral care, and local outreach across each region.

2012–2025
Growth and Collaboration

  • Both circuits expand programs for worship, mission, and community engagement:

    • Hants-Surrey Border Circuit oversees congregations in Aldershot, Farnham, Alton, Cove (Farnborough), Fleet, Frimley Green, Hartley Wintney, North Camp, Rowledge, and nearby villages.

    • Berkshire Surrey Borders Circuit serves Wokingham, Bracknell, Woosehill, and surrounding communities.

  • Churches collaborate on:

    • Training lay preachers

    • Outreach initiatives

    • Ecumenical projects

2025
Formation of the Blackwater Valley Methodist Circuit

  • September 2025 – Historic merger of the Hants‑Surrey Border Circuit and the Berkshire Surrey Borders Circuit forms the Blackwater Valley Methodist Circuit:

    • Churches across Berkshire, Hampshire, and Surrey unite under a single connected body.

    • The circuit reflects the Methodist heritage of connection, shared ministry, and community service.

    • Congregations retain their local identity while benefiting from collective worship, leadership, and outreach resources.
